The Answer:
Focus On What Really Matters In Relationships
When you’re involved in a relationship you can get wrapped up in the busy-ness of life and forget to spend time on each other or worse start to drive each other crazy.
Often times, it can become so easy to focus on petty stuff which really has no impact on our happiness such as a habit that annoys you or how “important” it is that we go to Pottery Barn for the new decorative pillows.
It’s important to shift your focus from such minor things in life like possessions and little annoyances to what really matters in relationships, as it can become too late to fix something if all your partner thinks you care about is how great the decorative pillows look on the bed.
Here are five of the things that really matter in relationships.
(This is only a starting point.)
1. Support.
When you’re in a relationship you should be able to support one another. If you’re going through a difficult time you should not have to go it alone. An upcoming job interview may be pending, or perhaps your partner has to go into surgery. No matter what it is, it’s important to give them a comforting hug and assure that that everything will work out in the end.
2. Trust.
It’s important to provide trust to your partner, and to not do anything to anger or upset them. They have to feel confident that you can spend all night out with friends, and not get into trouble. Providing trust may also be as simple as allowing them to proceed with a home repair alone, rather than hovering around them providing advice. It also means giving them the trust needed to do any tasks around the home, rather then being accusing and saying they screw things up.
3. Understanding.
Everyone is different and nobody is perfect. What one person may ace another may have extreme difficulty with. Rather than complaining about your partner’s character faults, one should provide understanding instead. There may even be times when you don’t understand them, but you should do your best to. A query can show you care.
4. Communication.
It’s important to have open communication in your relationship. This means sharing the details of your day with them, and not leaving out anything important that is happening. It also means that you and your partner should be talking about anything that is concerning to you. If you’re annoyed that they never do the dishes, you need to mention it before the whole thing blows up one day. Often the other person may wonder why you didn’t mention it sooner, so it’s best to not bottle things up.
5. Love.
Love is also important and was likely the basis for your relationship in the first place. Love also means giving hugs and kisses on a regular basis, and even having some romantic time alone with your partner. You don’t want to neglect this aspect of your relationship, as otherwise you’re just two people living together.
There are many other things that are important in a relationship, but ensure you have the basics covered first. Each day that you show your partner that you’re there for them will ensure that your bond becomes that much stronger.
Still caught up on the decorative pillows and driving each other crazy. Watch this for a great NEW perspective on what really matters and what does not.
